Moving launch guide
Compare moving costs without getting ambushed
How to compare movers, trucks, containers, storage, protection, timing, and the fees that make a cheap quote rather less charming.
Choose the right moving model first
Full-service movers, rental trucks, portable containers, freight options, and hybrid labor each shift cost, work, timing, and risk differently. Eliminate options that do not fit your distance, physical capacity, schedule, property access, or tolerance for uncertainty before comparing price.
Normalize every quote
Ask each provider to quote the same inventory, dates, origin and destination access, stairs, elevators, walking distance, packing requirements, storage days, and protection level. A lower quote built on fewer assumed hours or missing items is not actually lower.
- โBase transportation or hourly charge
- โMinimum hours and travel time
- โStairs, elevators, long carries, shuttles, and parking
- โPacking materials and specialty items
- โStorage, redelivery, fuel, tolls, taxes, and tips
- โDeposit, cancellation, rescheduling, and payment timing
Inspect the downside
Understand who performs the work, what happens if dates change, how loss or damage claims are handled, and whether the estimate can change. Keep valuables, medicine, documents, chargers, and first-night supplies with you.
Measure value as well as price
The cheapest method can be expensive if it consumes several days, creates injury risk, or jeopardizes a closing or work schedule. Put a reasonable value on your time and the help you will need before choosing.
