Trash bags: compare cost per bag without buying false economy

August 31, 2026Ā·5 min readĀ·For: Actively saving

Count, capacity, thickness, and failure rate determine whether a bargain bag actually saves money.

Start with capacity and count

Divide the final package price by the number of bags, but only compare bags with similar capacity. A 13-gallon kitchen bag and a 30-gallon contractor bag solve different problems even when the boxes look remarkably alike.

Strength changes the real unit cost

A thin bag that tears or leaks can turn one use into two bags and a small domestic incident. Compare thickness, drawstring design, and your household’s typical load before deciding that the lowest sticker price wins.

Fragrance is a feature, not value

Scented bags often carry a premium. Buy them if they solve a real household preference, but keep the fragrance surcharge separate from the underlying cost-per-bag comparison.

Choose a useful stock-up quantity

Trash bags store well and promotions recur, so an excellent unit price can justify buying several boxes. Stop before the inventory requires its own zoning variance.
